Welcome to Notes For Neighbors!
The space where we make time for not just reading, but writing handwritten notes to our neighbors.
Notes For Neighbors is a kindness movement that can take place in every single city, town, and village across the world that has pens and paper. I started it on Facebook, but since Substack is a community of writers, and those who enjoy the writing of others, I’m thinking this is a fantastic place to share my little idea. The concept is quite simple: When you see an opportunity to share a word of encouragement or appreciation or comfort with someone, get out a pen and note card or piece of paper, and tell them.
Yes, this is an attempt to connect with our neighbors the good ol’ fashioned way—by writing a note by hand. It does not have to be long or eloquent, it just has to be authentic and heartfelt.
Your neighbor is your friend, your enemy, a family member, a stranger. Sometimes offering a kind word to someone can change their whole day…their whole week…their whole life. Never doubt the power of a few kind words in the life of someone who might be struggling.
And if your recipient asks you what this is about, tell them “it’s a kindness movement called Notes For Neighbors.” Because while there may not be much we can all agree on anymore, we probably agree that a little more kindness is not a bad thing.
Words matter. Here’s your encouragement to use yours for good.
Will it take some time? Sure. Will it take longer than a text or email? Most likely. Will the effort to go to the mail box and add a stamp be worth the smile that comes across the recipients face? You’d better believe it!
I’ll be here, encouraging you, and maybe sharing a few more of my random thoughts along the way.
I should be going…time to write a note!
